The Fairfield Stags Club Baseball team swept their doubleheader against Montclair State University on Saturday, November 4, improving to 5-3 on the season. Sophomore
John Duddy took the ball for the Stags in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Duddy delivered three shout-out innings despite some heavy traffic on the bases, including escaping a bases loaded jam in the second. The Stags struck first on singles from second baseman Mike Sylvester and shortstop
Nicholas Milo, taking advantage from some sloppy Montclair State defense that ignited the rally. Montclair State pitching calmed down after this, though, while Stags pitching surrendered six runs throughout the middle innings. The Stags had traffic on the bases all day long but failed to get the big hit they needed until a two-run home run from left fielder
Caleb Birchem put them in striking distance. The Stags entered the seventh inning down 6-4, in desperate need of a hit with runners in scoring position. Catcher
Ryan Formica started the rally with a lead-off double into the gap, followed by an RBI single from
Brendan Bartoli. The Stags finally knocked the starting pitcher out of the game, forcing Montclair State to rely on their short-handed bullpen. An infield single tied the game at six and loaded the bases for the Stags, setting up a walk-off single from second baseman Mike Sylvester, who collected three hits on the day, as the Stags defeated Montclair State 7-6 in Game 1. In Game 2, Fairfield rode dominant pitching and timely hits to a 3-0 victory, sweeping the doubleheader. The Stags closed their fall season on Sunday, November 5, in a doubleheader against rival Sacred Heart University (Fairfield Won 10-5) and Marist College (Fairfield Won 10-4).
