Club Baseball Looking to Learn from Early Season Games

The Fairfield University Club Baseball team fell to the CCSU Blue Devils 3-1 on Sunday, October 6th, at Fairfield's Alumni Diamond. With both starting pitchers showing good command early, the game started off slow offensively for both squads. Fairfield freshman, Justin Lucas, threw heat from the very first pitch, not giving up a hit until the top of the fourth inning and having already poured in eight Ks. In the batter's box, the Stags were stymied early and often by not being able to drive in baserunners. The little movement they did have on the basepaths was thanks to a handful of CCSU wild pitches, which eventually yielded Fairfield's first and only run in the bottom of the fourth, to give them a 1-0 lead.
However, this lead would be short lived after the Stags allowed a series of walks, wild pitches, and lackadaisical hustle to reward the Blue Devils with all three of their runs in the top of the fifth. There were glimpses of life for Fairfield, such as a booming double from sophomore third baseman Ryan Formica in the top of the fourth and a single with the potential to be clutch from senior catcher Michael Sylvester in the bottom of the fifth. Unfortunately, both of these opportunities were squandered by the Stags, as five out of their last six batters failed to get on base.
When asked what Fairfield needed to do to get back in the win column, junior second baseman, Nick Milo, kept it simple: "...we gotta get the bats going…especially with runners in scoring position, guys on second and third, less than two (outs), we gotta put it in play." With this just the second game of the season, the 1-1 Stags will have time to do just that.
