Fairfield Men's Club Soccer faced off against the University of New Haven on Sunday, September 15 th . Entering the game with a 2-0 record, Fairfield pulled out a "scrappy" 1-0 win, as described by senior captain,
Andrew Howard. Starting on the turf for Fairfield were freshman
Luke James as the striker, senior captain
Andrew Howard at the left wing, and senior captain
John Berlam at the right wing. Seniors
Alejandro Pimentel,
James Layden along with sophomore Matt Morin, took positions in the midfield. Freshman
Mark Surretsky started at left back, with seniors
Colin Marment and
Cristian Trofa in the center, and sophomore
Brendan Lambe at right back. Senior Sam Ponessa was the starting goalkeeper.
The game started off slow and more of a defensive game for Fairfield, but it began to pick up towards the middle of the first half. The team was determined to score a goal, with many opportunities around the net. Near the end of the first half, senior midfielder,
Connor Hession, assisted a goal to senior captain
Andrew Howard, who slid in for the finish. Fairfield won the first half 1-0 and started the second half with a quicker pace. The game then began to get more competitive between the two teams. In the second half, the goalkeeper, freshman,
Ryan Carella, had some more action with many great saves, leading University of New Haven to scoring no goals throughout the entire game. Although the game started out slow, the competitiveness and drive to win from Fairfield, ultimately led them to the 1-0 win.
The new speedy addition to the team, freshman,
Luke James was able to "cause problems for the defenders" on the opposing team as
Andrew Howard mentioned. He is very quick and diligent with his skills and assisted the team in keeping the ball up on the offensive side. He has been "overperforming" which is something the team loves to see from a new player.
Another standout player, who is also a new addition to the team, is freshman
Mark Surretsky who played the whole game at left back. He held his composure and patience on the defensive end, which was very important to the team, especially during this game.
Looking forward to the rest of the season and the upcoming games, the team plans to win all their remaining games and aims to qualify for Regionals. With competitive matches coming soon, Fairfield is optimistic about the season ahead.
