Stags Soccer Flip the Script in Second Half to Earn 4-1 Victory

The University of New Haven came into town on Sunday for a matchup against the Fairfield's Men's Club Soccer team. It was cold and wet to start, but that didn't slow the Stags, who opened the game controlling possession.

They quickly worked their way down the field, and a fortunate bounce led to an early opportunity that rang right off the crossbar. Fairfield stayed strong defensively in the first half, with key blocks from the back line helping keep the ball on the attacking side. The Stags created several quality chances, setting each other up well, but the New Haven goalkeeper stood tall and denied every attempt that came his way.

The first half came to a close, and play resumed quickly into the second. Fairfield continued to control possession and apply pressure, but on New Haven's first real opportunity of the half, a long-distance shot found the back of the net to give them a 1-0 lead and the first goal of the game.

The Stags needed a response, and captain Thomas Healey (#10) helped rally his team. Their persistence paid off when a penalty kick was saved by the New Haven goalkeeper, but the rebound fell right to a Stags player, who buried it to tie the game at 1-1.

Fairfield kept the momentum going. Shortly after, Gianluca Ruggiero (#21) fired a shot off the far post, chased down his own rebound, and finished to give the Stags a 2-1 lead. The defense continued to dominate, giving New Haven little to no opportunity to generate offense.

The Stags struck again as Keller Berry (#22) found the back of the net, with the shot taking a slight deflection off a defender to extend the lead to 3-1. Moments later, Adam Healey (#30) made a strong move past a defender but lost the ball, which was quickly recovered by Ruggiero, and played right back to him for the finish, making it 4-1 Stags.

That goal sealed sealed the deal, as the Stags battled back in the second half to earn themselves a 4-1 victory.
