Men's club basketball played Sacred Heart University on Saturday, February 22 in a
double header. SHU is one of Fairfield's biggest competitors and one of the top teams in
the league. This was a big game for the team in which they took on two close wins. Fairfield
went into this game with a 10-2 record in their regular season. Winning these games
secured Fairfield a spot in Regionals.
The starting line up in the first game was senior
Andy Martin, senior
Trevor Donnelly,
junior Joe Scandalios, sophomore
Billy Hicks, and sophomore
Leo Ackermann. This strong
team pulled out two competitive wins and continued to keep the energy up through the ups
and downs. The first game took some time to get into. It was an even game to start with
quick offensive and defensive turnovers from both teams. Fairfield was strong in the
defensive end and continued to execute towards the beginning of the second half around
the basket. Fairfield won the first game closely with a 60-54 final score. The leading player
in points was junior
Sean Vinson with 27 points in this first game.
Fairfield stepped onto the court for the second game ready to take on another win.
This game stayed close throughout its entirety. Fairfield had some good rebounds on the
defensive end leading to a large number of points being scored. The team connected and
worked well together in this second game, assisting each other in their shots and
progressing to the end. Fairfield took on a close win in this game as well with a 91-83 final
score. The leading scorer in this game was
Billy Hicks with 26 points.
Some stand out players during these games were
Billy Hicks,
Leo Ackermann, and
Joe Scandilous. They had some great shots and helped keep up the quick offensive
movement of the team, leaving SHU in the dust. With supportive cheers from their manager
Tripp Lyons, Fairfield took on two competitive and important wins to this team.
Fairfield looks forward to the rest of their games and plans to finish off this season
strong. They continue to work together through these team efforts despite any ups and
downs that may come their way.
