Saturday Jan. 31, the Fairfield University Men's Club Basketball team played the Yale Bulldogs, another top team in their division, with major playoff implications on the line. Starting off strong, the Stags came out with an early lead and maintained control throughout the game. With intense grit and determination on both ends of the court, Fairfield was able to secure a 62-57 victory. Senior captain Sean Vinson emphasizes the importance of the win, noting, "It was important for us to secure one win and the point differential versus Yale in order to have the greatest chance to qualify for our regional playoff tournament."
The first half was dominated by the Stags' offense, highlighted by three huge steals and a constant, fast-paced move up the court. The defense was just as strong with four blocks, two from sophomore starter Luke Liscandra, to shut down Yale's scoring attempts. Fairfield headed into halftime with a 38-29 lead.
The second half was filled with intense energy and excitement from the court and the bench as Fairfield fought hard to preserve its lead. One of the game's most exciting moments came from #5 Sean Vinson's behind-the-back pass to #0 Luke Liscandra, who was able to secure the basket. The excitement didn't stop there as #23 Joe Scandalious put up 11 points on the board. Each point from the Stags levels up the intensity of cheers and effort on and off the court. Vinson highlighted the team's chemistry, stating, "Our team chemistry plays a large part in our ability to be successful as a team, a lot of the small aspects that don't show up in the box score…There's a certain level of accountability that you just can't replicate on a team where people aren't willing to run through a wall for each other." The Stags' collaboration and effort appeared to be the difference as they secured a crucial win in their push towards the playoffs.
This competitive momentum carried into their second game against Yale, but the Stags unfortunately fell short in a 71-69 overtime loss. Fairfield now sits at 1–1 for their Saturday games, as they continue to battle Yale for the top spot in the league this season.
