The Fairfield women ended their pre-season with a scrimmage against Roger Williams
University, the 3rd place finisher in last year's NCR D2 National Championship.
Fairfield started with a strong run, setting up solid clean rucks and producing quick ball to
create defensive chaos in the middle of the field, allowing Senior
Emily Raia to run through a
gap and score first.
RWU and Fairfield then exchanged tries within the first 20 minutes, at a high pace of attack and
defense on both sides. A few missteps in defense allowed RWU another 2 tries to end the first
half 14 - 24 in RWU's favor.
Given the nature of the friendly with unlimited rolling subs, the second half utilized the full
bench, allowing the second half to increase their experience and testing new positions for
returning players. Unfortunately, our structure broke down, allowing RWU to take advantage of
gaps and defensive miscommunications, to break away with a definitive win.
Sophomore Kate Robertson displayed composure and solid field awareness at her debut as
scrum-half. Junior
Kayla Fox provided top work rate with every-present support and feisty
challenges at every breakdown she was involved in. Her command of the scrum and control of
the lineouts helped to stabilize the set pieces. Congrats to both Robertson and Fox for being
named BOP.
A inspired start to the season, with a lot of promise and an evolving roadmap of development
to get ahead of our season opener next Saturday.
