On Friday, February 2, 2024, the Fairfield University Men's and Women's club basketball teams hosted doubleheaders in the Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The event gave the teams a unique opportunity to play in the newly opened arena and allowed fans to attend free of charge.
 
Following a blowout in game one, the men's team swept their doubleheader against Yale with an overtime victory in game two. Despite the win, game two was a challenge for the Stags, who had a difficult time delivering the final blow in both regulation and overtime. The game was a back and forth affair, with both teams struggling to muster up points.
 
After a game tying three pointer from Yale, the Stags missed two potentially game winning free throws, sending the game to overtime. The Stags were finally able to deliver the knockout punch in overtime, though, with a steal from Jordan Dyer and clutch free throws from Mike White to ice the game. The win was a big one for the men's team following a split with Sacred Heart last weekend, as the team improves to 7-1 in league play.
 
The women's team squared off against cross-town rival Sacred Heart in their doubleheader, looking to build off their doubleheader sweep last weekend against Montclair State. The game was a defensive battle, with both teams having trouble shooting the ball. Sacred Heart was able to pull away late in the first half and didn't look back, defeating the Stags 41-31.
 
It was an uncharacteristic game for the Stags, who have been very efficient offensively and have thrived in transition all season long. The team will look to bounce back next weekend with another doubleheader and get ready for their next match-up against Sacred Heart.
