On Sunday, September 22nd, Fairfield Women's Club Field Hockey started oI their season with a very close and competitive game versus Quinnipiac University. Although the game did not result in Fairfield's favor, they pulled out a tie. To start out the game in the forward line, (from left to right) were seniors Caity O'Connell,
Haley Giannettino, and freshman Kyleigh Stellato. In the midfield line on the left was junior
Sofia Anthony, in the attacking center mid position was sophomore Grace Ganey, defensive center mid was senior
Caroline Cleary, and at right midfield was senior
Mary Norman. In the defensive line at left back was junior
Stephanie Reap, in the center was freshman Laura Valkanas, and on the right was junior
Payton McDonough. Finally in the cage was freshman Nicole Genoble.
The game began slow with even movement among both teams in the offensive realm. No goals were scored in the first half by either team, but the competitiveness began to pick up in the beginning of the second half, after Fairfield's half time pep talk. Towards the end of the third quarter, Quinnipiac scored a straight shot oI a corner. Fairfield, fired up, found space up the right side of the field with a break away. Senior Caity O'Connell assisted junior Kate Brenton up the right side of the field for a goal scored in the left bottom corner. Throughout the fourth quarter, Fairfield had many opportunities surrounding the cage, but were unfortunately unable to finish. The forward line was very well composed and found the splits to get up to their sixteen-yard circle. The game resulted in a tie, with a competitive match and a strong start to the new season.
Looking forward to the rest of the season, Fairfield plans to enhance their skills and grow to be even better as a team. With more competitive games to come, Fairfield is very enthusiastic for the season ahead. Their next match will be against University of Connecticut on Sunday, September 29th.
