Fairfield Club Field Hockey returned to the field to open their spring season on Sunday,
March 22nd with a competitive game against UMass. The team has been strong this season with
key returning players as well as many new underclassmen joining the team.
Starting on the forward line were
Cielle McInerney,
Sam Gondelman, and Caroline
Fleming. In the midfield were
Courtney Walsh,
Maggie O'Donnell,
Lynsey Tashjian, and Grace
Ganey. On defense were
Stephanie Reap,
Maeve Kelly, and
Riley Dalton. In goal was honorary
field player
Sam Murray, who stepped up as the team's goalie was unable to attend. This was a
huge step up and played a key role in the game.
Fairfield went into this game knowing it would be competitive and tough, as UMass is
one of the team's strongest competitors. Fairfield previously faced UMass at Nationals in
Virginia, so this game was an opportunity to compete against them again and show improvement
from their last matchup.
The game started off fast paced, with the first goal scored by UMass, ending the first
quarter 1-0. Sam made several great saves in goal, keeping the score low and giving Fairfield the
opportunity to stay competitive. The offensive movement was key throughout the game, helping
keep the ball on the offensive end with strong stick work and clean passing.
In the second quarter,
Sofia Anthony answered quickly with a goal to tie the game 1-1.
UMass responded with two quick goals, making the score 3-1 at halftime. At this point, the game
became more defensive, and Fairfield's defense stepped up with strong positioning and an
effective press.
Fairfield continued to stay competitive and showed great team chemistry, especially with
the new players stepping into important roles. Although the game ended 4-1 in UMass's favor,
Fairfield stepped up, with Sam in goal and the team competing hard and supporting each other
throughout the game.
This game was a great display of skill and competitiveness, and although it did not end in
Fairfield's favor, the team left the field feeling confident about their performance. Fairfield has
two more home games left in their spring season on April 12th and April 19th. As they prepare
for these upcoming games, Fairfield looks to take on SHU and Quinnipiac and finish the season
strong.
