Stags Dominate Crosstown Rival Sacred Heart in Statement 5-0 Shutout Win

Stags Dominate Crosstown Rival Sacred Heart in Statement 5-0 Shutout Win
By Zachary Pers

A big matchup for the Stags Women's Club Field Hockey team as their crosstown rival Sacred Heart made the short trip to Fairfield on Sunday afternoon. With energy high from the start, the Stags started nice and early by setting the tone right at the start. Fairfield struck first thanks to a determined finish from Sam Gondelman (#7), giving the Stags the early 1-0 advantage. Sacred Heart responded with a few chances of their own, including an opportunity off a penalty corner, but the Stags held firm defensively. Goaltender Nicole Genoble was outstanding early, turning away multiple shots and anchoring the defense with a stonewall performance in net for the Stags. Gondelman (#7) continued to be a force on the offensive end, finding space and creating opportunities, but was unable to convert on a few strong looks. The pressure eventually paid off late in the quarter when Lauren DiTulllio (#20) found the back of the net on a tap-in right in front, extending the lead to 2-0 with just a few minutes remaining. The second quarter saw both teams trade possession, but Fairfield controlled much of the pace still. A beautiful touch pass from Gondelman (#7) led to a breakaway opportunity for Maggie O'Donnell (#5), who did well to keep the ball in play and get a shot off, but Sacred Heart's goalkeeper came up with a huge save, rejecting the opportunity. Sacred Heart pushed back with another penalty corner chance, but once again, Genoble came through with an outstanding pad save to keep the shutout intact as the half came to a close. Coming out of halftime, Fairfield picked up the pace of play yet again. Strong possession led to another scoring chance, as Grace Ganey (#6) received a perfectly placed pass in front of the net, spun past a defender, and finished cleanly to give the Stags a 3-0 lead heading into the final quarter of play. The fourth quarter started off relatively quiet, but Fairfield added some insurance late. DiTullio (#20) struck again, scoring her second of the game to make it 4-0 with just five minutes left to play. The Stags weren't done yet. After a shot from distance, Ally Quinn (#19) was in the right place at the right time, putting home the rebound to cap off the scoring in this one. The final whistle sounded as Fairfield secured a dominant 5-0 victory over Sacred Heart. A complete performance on both ends of the field, thanks to strong defense, standout goaltending, and balanced scoring, gives the Stags plenty of momentum moving forward in their season.

Fairfield Club Field Hockey Dominates SHU in 5-0 Victory
By Sydney Dalton
On Sunday, April 12th, Fairfield Club Field Hockey took on nearby competitor Sacred Heart University. Fairfield had previously faced SHU in the fall season, coming away with a dominant 5–0 win. Heading into this matchup, Fairfield was prepared and ready to compete once again. Starting in goal was Nicole Genoble. The defensive line, from left to right, featured Riley Dalton, Sydney Dalton, and Payton McDonough. Holding down the defensive center midfield position was Maggie O'Donnell. In the midfield, from left to right, were Grace Ganey, Lauren DiTullio, and Maeve Kelly. Leading the offense were Ally Quinn, Sam Gondelman, and
Caroline Fleming. SHU came out much stronger and quicker compared to the previous matchup, ready to challenge Fairfield early. The game began as a defensive battle, but Fairfield struck first within the opening five minutes on a fast break goal from Sam Gondelman. SHU responded with aggressive offensive pressure, earning an early corner, but Fairfield's defense held strong with a clean stop and clear. Fairfield continued to build momentum offensively, showing strong passing and quick give-and- go movement. This led to a second goal by Lauren DiTullio. As the half came to a close, SHU earned another corner, but Nicole Genoble made a key save and the defense cleared the ball out of the circle. Fairfield headed into halftime leading 2–0. Knowing that a two-goal lead was not enough to feel comfortable, Fairfield came out strong in the third quarter. Just three minutes in, Grace Ganey tipped in a goal at the right post to extend the lead to 3–0. With the momentum fully on their side, Fairfield increased their offensive pressure, maintaining possession in the circle and creating multiple scoring opportunities. Lauren DiTullio added her second goal of the game, followed by a final goal from Ally Quinn to seal the win. Fairfield finished the game with a 5–0 victory, matching their result from the fall season, but against a much more competitive SHU team. The team left the field proud of their performance and effort. Fairfield now looks ahead to closing out the spring season with their final game against Quinnipiac. Be sure to come out and support the team and celebrate the seniors in their last game.
