On Sunday 11/09/2025, Fairfield University's Club Field Hockey team (FUCFH) had an incredible win against Sacred Heart University on their Senior Day. Seniors, Payton McDonough and Maggie O'Donnell, highlight the success of their season and goals for the post season by sharing, "Our goal is to give our best effort and play to the highest of our abilities in every game. Most importantly, we want to enjoy this moment as a team and celebrate an incredible regular season by having fun and working together!"
This outstanding 5-0 win came from two goals by #3 Cielle McInerney, and one each from #8 Kate Brenton, #10 Sofia Anthony, and #9 Megan Latch. This shutout was supported by a strong defensive performance and goalkeeping by Nicole Genoble.
FUCFH is part of the Field Hockey League (NFHL), made up of over 100 collegiate club field hockey teams. The NFHL hosts the Challenge Cup and the Championship Cup. The FUCFH has participated in the Challenge Cup, open to all teams, for the past two years. However, the Championship Cup is only open to the top 16 teams in the NFHL. Rankings are based on average game points per game, greatest average goal differential, least average goals against, and greatest average goals scored. This is the first time FUCFH has qualified to participate in this tournament! This significant accomplishment is largely due to FUCFH's impressive performances in games against highly competitive teams, including Providence, UMass, Northeastern, Quinnipiac, URI, and UConn. The team went 5-2-1 in the regular season, with many close games and some amazing goals that tied matches. FUCFH scored five unanswered goals against URI and earned a big win over Northeastern, an A team, while FUCFH is a B team.
This year marks the first time the club has ranked within the top 16 in the NFHL. The team continues to become more competitive each year, making a name for the Stags within the league. McDonough and O'Donnell comment, "We are so excited and proud of our team being the first to qualify for the Championship Cup in program history. It feels like this success has been years in the making, as we've spent the past few years working to become more competitive. It is a big step for the program and we are excited to compete at a high level against amazing teams." FUCFH's success comes from practicing together with discipline and consistency, strong team bonding that leads to better on-field chemistry, and fundraisers that helped fund the trip to Virginia Beach. The team is also grateful for the support from friends and family who have helped them reach this amazing milestone.
Coming off a strong Senior Day win, the Stags are ready to take on the Championship Cup!
